What if: The MMV server is unavailable

Post by TKS »

So I couldn't use MMV because my registration was invalid because the MMV server (where the registration-key seems to be checked during start) was unavailable due to Cloudflare being down.
After a while, the situation returned to normal and I could work again.

But one question arises:

If Magic goes out of business for some reason, or its server is compromised and all license keys are lost, or whatever else, does that mean I have a useless piece of software on my PC?

Is there a plan B?

If you have the Performer version and that's happening, then please contact us.

That is very unlikely to happen, especially for more than a day or two. But servers go down, and all software that requires an internet connection is affected, right?
Is there a plan B?
What would you suggest?

If an MMV installation on a specific computer has verified its license key a certain number of times within a year, inform it that it does not need to reconnect to the server for verification.
If this key is used again for installation on another PC, a connection must of course be established to verify this, and the email address must match the one used for the first installation.
The only possible loophole would be if I (as a malicious actor) allowed every unknown installation via my email address.
While not impossible, this is unlikely.

That is already how it works for the Studio edition. But if it's not working properly, perhaps there is a bug that needs to be fixed.

If you try to install on another PC, it will say no, because your previous installation is still active. That is why we have Help > Deactivate, which also requires an internet connection.

There have to be steps taken to prevent a license from being used on more computers than allowed. If something is unlikely but not impossible, people will take advantage of it and they will tell others how they took advantage of it. Unfortunately that is the world we live in.
