DJ Controller

Post by titans »

Hi Guys!

I perform visuals with another DJ who uses a DJ controller. After reading many of the forums, I see that the word MIDI comes out a lot. Does MIDI include DJ Controllers? My DJ partner has aPioneer DDJ-SB . If a DJ controller is not a MIDI device, is it still possible to connect it to magic music visual?, and if it is possible, what line/cable do I use to connect it with my computer. Thanks a lot!!

I would guess it depends on what outputs your hardware has....i.e midi or USB...maybe even firewire (I have never used a DJ deck but I do use lots of other midi (via usb) hardware in my music making and all of it is assignable within Magic for pararmeter changing etc...my BCR2000 is perfect for this).
Let me know what output you use to connect to the PC and I will try and help (most DJ stuff I have looked at uses midi through USB).

Thank you for the reply. The DJ controller has a usb cable (looks like this; http://uniqsource.com/wp-content/upload ... leMIDI.jpg) If I were to connect the DJ controller to my computer via usb, would the the magic music software recognise the DJ controllers as an input? Thanks a lot for the help

Hi
Yes that should be fine so long as the controller is sending midi messgaes through the usb (it should be).
Then you just have to tell Magic to use the controller.

This is how I would start with my BCR-2000 controller which is basically the same to set up as a DJ controller.

Midi mapping can be a little daunting at first but its not too difficult.
I hope this is helpful...feel free to ask more questions.
Good luck :)

The DDJ-SB definitely supports MIDI -- see http://www.pioneerdj.com/en-us/support/ ... on/ddj-sb/ and scroll down to the "MIDI-COMPATIBLE SOFTWARE" section.

The easiest way to set up any MIDI device in Magic is to use the MIDI Learn function: https://magicmusicvisuals.com/downloads ... #MIDILearn. It lets you automatically configure any module parameter to respond to a button or knob or fader on your controller.

The MIDI Learn function detects most MIDI commands. If it doesn't seem to work with your DDJ-SB after you connect it via the USB cable, it might need to have drivers installed. It looks like you can get drivers from the pioneerdj.com link above.

Just make sure you start Magic after you connect the DDJ-SB (and install any drivers), because Magic only detects new MIDI devices at startup.
