Creat an envelope from audio loudness

I _believe_ I am looking for and "envelope Follower" (although the name confuses me)
I want to take a piece of audio and have the software (pref plugin, to Magic or other DAW) create a volume envelope that automatically follows the amplitude, creating an envelope that I can export, maybe modify and use in Magic to modulate FX, MIDI etc.
I realise I can use the audio itself and maybe a Smooth Modifier, but I do not necessarily want slavish following of the audio amplitude: hence the keep and modify ability.
I have followed up "Envelope Follower" and "Envelope Creator" but while I see a lot of stuff to USE envelopes or manually make envelopes (some usable elsewhere),, nothing I can find says it will automatically create one. I tried a .txt FX for Reaper, but it simply did not show.
Any help appreciated.
