how to make a png transparent overlay

hey i was under the impression that i could create a clear overlay .png in photoshop and then use this to create a visualization that would be transparent so i could put it over a video in my editing program but when i tried the background came out solid is there something im doing wrong??? Thanks

PNGs can have transparency and, yes, you can use them in Magic. There are even some video formats that support transparency (alpha channel). Make sure when you export from photoshop that your image has an alpha channel.

Even for files without transparency you might get away with a blend, mask or key which are all available in Magic.
