Since updating to yosemite whenever I open Magic kernel task jumps up to 200-290%, is this normal?

No, not normal 
. On my Macs the kernel_task only uses a few percent even when Magic is open.
I'm not sure what could be causing it but have you considered upgrading your OS? Honestly Yosemite was not a good release; there were several problems.
