Making my first visual

Post by Progeekzy »

Greetings everyone! I recently picked up this fine piece of software and i was hoping to get some help. The user guide is a bit....daunting. Especially to someone just starting out. And trying to find the information im actually looking for the pertains to what i want to do is not all that easy.

For my first project what i would like are individual bars that lay at rest at the bottom of the screen that jump up as it detects sound. Kind of like on this image
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41qYLKepbjL.jpg

On the main display to the right you can see the kind of bars im talking about. Also, i cant figure out how to get past 1 color and into a more radiant style color.

Is there any basic tutorials out there that can help me out with these specific goals. or do i need to be a rocket scientist and read through the entire user manual?

Hello,

I would definitely read that manual if your a total new person to sound and midi driven animation. Also you learn the most from actual patches, so dig in below when your ready.

This is the patch folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Magic\SampleProjects ( just go into your magic folder there are many samples there)

A file you may want to examine specifically is the Stereo Spectrum_30Band patch. It is basically a guide on how to build a equalizer manually.

Hi...I am also in the learning stage lol....but I have found that with the set of tools provided I can achieve most things I set out to do with a bit of headscratching and experimentation.
I just keep adding things and changing the parameters to see what happens...Myabe not constructive but its fun :).

You should definitely check out the Spectrum module, because it is a quick and easy way to get something like the image you posted. If you want to move it to the bottom of the screen, just use the Translate module with -1 in the Y direction. Here is an example:

(I also added a Scale module after the Spectrum to stretch it by 2.0 in the Y direction, since the bottom half is lost after the Translate.)
Also, i cant figure out how to get past 1 color and into a more radiant style color.
If you want to get more in-depth and start looking at the individual frequency bands (so you can color them differently, for example), go to Help > Open Sample Project and have a look at FreqRanges.magic and StereoSpectrum_30Band.magic.
Is there any basic tutorials out there that can help me out with these specific goals.
As far as tutorials are concerned, if you haven't yet watched the basic tutorial video for Magic, check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUodHctwcYQ

Derek Gee has also done 7 (!) tutorial videos for Magic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqC_CkS ... hi_pkXGw7x

There are lots of other tutorials in this forum: viewforum.php?f=3

Well, I'm not a rocket scientist, and I wrote most of the manual :). I tried to make it as easy to understand as I could, but there are also a lot of important technical details to become familiar with, especially for advanced users.

I am always happy to provide answers here if you still have questions :)
