x264 versus x264 422

Post by TEHK »

I'm a bit unclear what the latter offers, does switching upgrade from 8bit to 10bit color depth?

As I understand it, the difference is in the spatial colour resolution, not in the bit depth.
For an image with colour, less fine detail will be lost with 4:2:2 coding.

There's an interactive illustration of the difference here: https://www.ntt-electronics.com/en/info ... 20_a-422-1
Compare the original with 1st 4:2:2 and 1st 4:2:0

It would be most interesting to be able to get 10-bit output from Magic

Ahh, thanks. Part of what I was missing is that the basic non-422 x264 output is in fact 4:2:0.

I understand chroma-subsampling and the page you shared has some great visual examples of the errata that arise from using different formats.

I too was also wondering how/and/or/if Magic could output 10bit HDR as well, but that appears to be another topic altogether.
