Spout Out as a Module

Post by Fractal Grinder »

Would it be possible to make Spout out a Module, so we could send different cominations of nodes and or scenes out to a mapping software, instead of the full Magic output?

For that you can use the "official" Spout FFGL plugins, which are included with the main Spout installation: http://spout.zeal.co/download-software/. Like all FFGL plugins, they appear as modules in Magic, and you can add as many as you want.

However, there are a few caveats:

1) FFGL currently only supports 32-bit, so 32-bit Magic must be used.

2) You can't use Magic's playlist transitions. Spout doesn't know how to choose between two senders in different scenes when the scenes are transitioning (fading) between one another, so it gets confused and tries to render them both at the same time, resulting in ugly flickering. But as long as you only use the Cut transition in the Playlist, or avoid the Playlist entirely, you should be fine.

Personally though, what I would recommend is the following:

1) Don't use the Spout FFGL plugins :). Keep using the Spout output which is built in to Magic. This way, you avoid the problems above.

2) Increase your graphics resolution in Magic, for example, to 2560x720 (twice as wide as 1280x720). Then, in your mapping software, "split" the Spout stream down the middle, so that you map the left half to one area, and the right half to another.

Cool eh? :) Using the second method is also more efficient, because it has much less overhead than having multiple Spout senders.
