Retain 3D Desaturation

While HSBcolor and RGBcolor modules will retain the depth information of geometries, I find only the 2D Effect "HueSaturation" module to have the ability to remove color saturation to yield a more grey-toned image. Is there a work-around to keep depth information while desaturating the input?
