HDMI Video Capture

Post by Magic »

I wanted to let everyone know about a great HDMI video capture solution I tested: the Magewell USB HDMI capture dongle (http://www.magewell.com/usb-capture-hdmi).

It works very nicely with Magic's VideoCapture module on both Mac and PC, and it's completely plug-and-play (no drivers are required). It supports up to 1080p resolution and 60fps. The lag is pretty reasonable -- only 1 or 2 frames. Note that a USB 3.0 port is required.

It will accept any HDMI source, so you can connect the output of other computers, or high-quality video cameras, etc.

There are also other versions of the dongle which support DVI and SDI inputs, and 4K resolution, but I haven't tested them.

If you have any questions, or if you have a different hardware solution you'd like to recommend, feel free to reply! And please note that I am not endorsed by or affiliated with Magewell in any way; the above represents my independent opinion only.

I work with another VJane together on some parties now.
She is doing stuff with Resolume.
I found the idea nice to just intercept her HDMI signal and process the video on Magic.

I found the Maxwell to be quite expensive though, since I don't know yet if I will use it more than once a year, so I tried alternatives.

Here are my results:

Elgato Game Capture HD60 S
EUR 176,99

Not working out.
Captures video only through it's own software, didn't find a way to stream it into Magic.
Just saw a post here talking about ManyCam, if I find some time before sending it back I'll give it a try.

StarTech.com StarTech.com USB 3.0 HDMI Video Recorder
EUR 194,23
At least not working on Mac, because it is not supported. I misinterpreted the product description I guess.

LinkStable HD Game Capture Card
EUR 135,99
Works perfectly fine with VideoCapture and VideoCaptureQT modules.
Since it was delivered too late I didn't try it live with the other VJane yep, but I can capture my other MacBook.

Hi - just wondering if the LinkStable HD Game Capture Card has been working well?

The cost of the Magewell is putting me off getting that one and having struggled for years to get the BMagic Intensity Shuttle working on the Macbook thunderbolt port I am reluctant to try the USB 3 version on a PC.

I'm looking to run macbook output into Magic on a Dell through a capture card and out of Magewell/BMagic and Linkstable the Linkstable looks to be the best value.

Interested to know if there are alternatives? I haven't been able to get the Hauppage Rocket working very well into the Dell using NDI and Magic doesn't recognise it in VideoQT.
