Thoughts on the new 2021 Macbook Pros and MMV?

Post by iglooooooo »

It's about time for me to get a new Macbook and I'm curious to hear what others think regarding the new 2021 machines and MMV. (For better or worse, I am unfortunately tied to Mac for a number of pieces of software). Is MMV built in such a way that users will notice big improvements when using the M1 Pro/M1 Max chips and improved GPUs?

Currently all un-optimised code runs through a an interpreter layer - quite quickly on the M1 and probably quicker on the M1 Max. I understand that Magic has been tested in this regard: https://magicmusicvisuals.com/forums/vi ... +m1#p11124

The M1 Max seems to have a more powerful GPU with access to a ton of (unified and high bandwidth) memory but only Eric can say if Magic uses the M1 GPU fully. Looking at the thread mentioned above I would guess not (yet).

With GPUs at eye watering prices at the moment, the new Macs look a bit more attractive but they're still VERY expensive and even a fully spec'd M1 Max doesn't compete with a discrete high end GPU - though optimisation might bring it closer.

I've been playing with ML repos for generating video and it is very cramped on my 8GB 2080. 64GB would be awesome and better than all (or at least most) GPUs for that type of work but I don't think any of the repos are compatible yet - need conversion from cuda to metal.

I shall wait a bit longer I think, but the apple silicon has certainly made me look where I wouldn't have looked before.
