MagicNDISender, linking but no video

Post by mpr128 »

Testing MagicNDISender before a gig coming up where I need to send my Magic output to a Resolume rig which is doing the mapping and blending.

I'm running Performer v2.3 64 bit on my Windows 10 gaming laptop.
Installed MagicNDISender & receiver plug ins.
These load ok and allow me to place the send module into my project.
Laptop is plugged into my gig LAN switch and set to Airplane mode (to disable wifi)

Using Sienna NDI Monitor v5.56 on my Mac Pro (Mojave 10.14.6).
Sienna opens ok and sees the two NDI Senders (2 test and 3 test), but just show a checkerboard pattern on screen.
Mac Pro is plugged into the same gig switch and has no wifi card.

Also, using Sienna NDI Monitor on my iPhone. This seems more flakey at seeing the sender laptop. But when it does see it, it allows me to select it, but video is black.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

I'm not 100% sure because I didn't write the NDI modules. Have you tried asking at https://spout.discourse.group/?

Appreciate the suggestion, but as I understand it, Spout and Syphon only work between applications running on the same computer, they can't send video to another computer via a LAN.
NDI will send video across a LAN which is needed if the two applications are running on two different computers.

The developer of Spout also coded the NDI plugins for Magic. That's why Eric suggested that forum.

Have you tried checking NDI on each computer separately? That way you could identify whether it is a PC problem, a Mac problem or a network issue. You can also run NDI senders and receivers outside of any application either on the same computer or across the network.

Lots more reading & thinking :

Someone else at the same gig wants to send video from their Synesthesia rig into Resolume, so that takes me to a hardware solution which can be shared between my Magic setup and their Synesthesia setup.

Looked at HDMI to NDI converter. ~$NZ1000

But found an ATEM Mini Pro for the same price and much more capable.

Does anyone here have any experience using these ?

Firstly, I don't have experience with NDI and haven't yet evaluated the ATEM Mini Pro, so the following is just a caution.

A fundamental issue with any transfer between rigs is the latency - i.e. the lag between the input stimulus (e.g. audio) and the video that emerges some time later. There is ALWAYS a delay, usually 2 or 3 frames minimum, at each stage - and you will have three stages plus the projector's delay. The highest possible input framerate (60Hz for the ATEM) will minimise the total delay, but I would expect it to be quite noticable. If possible, test in advance if the lag is important. NDI may well have lower overall latency.

The delay from input to output is of critical importance with for IMAG https://audiopronw.com/av-faqs/what-is- ... ification/ , so I tried searching "ATEM Mini Pro" "IMAG". There seem to be concerns over the internal latency of the ATEM (eg https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-revi ... EU4MAUSDCI ), although I haven't yet found any quantification.

Best wishes and good luck! Please report back on your findings and eventual solution - I'm sure this will be of interest to others (certainly to myself).

Thanks for your comments about latency. I've seen that mentioned elsewhere as well.
The gig is a week away and with no sign of a provable software solution in my hands, I bought two hardware solutions.

Black Magic ATEM Mini Pro ISO $NZ1090 used
Basically, a hardware video mixer that will take 4x HDMI inputs, mix (with a few effects) into a single HDMI output.
It will also plug into a USB-C port (on the Resolume rig) and 'pretend' to be a webcam, so Resolume sees the webcam inputs then applies mapping and outputs to projectors.
Added benefit, this will serve up the mixed output into YouTube Live or Twitch very easily.

Black Magic Ultra Studio Mini Recorder $NZ210 used
Takes an HDMI input and converts to Thunderbolt output.
Very simple piece of hardware. Hopefully Resolume will 'see' the video being served up on the Thunderbolt port.

Setup and testing will be carried out on Friday, 15 April. So I'll report back soon after then with results.
