CPU vs GPU for rendering?

Post by artur.fisher »

I am still considering the new PC build.
My main goal is video rendering with Magic, I am not going to do any live work.

The main objective is increasing the rendering speed.
At the moment the rendering speed is about 10 - 20 FPS for 1080p.

So, the questions are:
1. Based on the specifics of Magic, what would work better - more cores or a more powerful GPU?
2. Would Magic be able to efficiently utilize more than 8 cores during rendering? I am considering a dual Xeon build where I can get up to 24 cores (48 threads).
3. Or is it better to invest in a powerful GPU, like GeForce GTX 1080 TI 11 GB? I can get one second-hand for a very reasonable money.

I have checked the resource manager and it showed very high CPU load 95 - 100% on all my 8 threads during render and nearly no CPU load during live preview. I suppose that rendering should be CPU intensive task, is my assumption correct?

Thank you in advance!

Both are important but I guess I'd say the CPU is a bit more important for rendering.

Yes Magic can use most if not all the cores on your system for rendering.

Also the write speed of your hard disk is important for rendering so don't forget about it. SSD is always the best.

Thank you very much for the reply!
Yes, I am aware about the write speed. I think I will use a small NVMe drive as a rendering destination.
