For stylus digitisers maybe try something like this?

You have to use the pen though, for absolute positioning.
And for tablets try TouchOSC or Lemur (which do midi and OSC),

You got me! But then there's the thing - I confused myself (or my thinking stopped) because I expected the wrap to cope with negatives. My expectations that the expression modifier, while intimidating to some, would handle any maths correctly, might not confuse or limit thinking as in my case. Thanks.

That's a possibility, certainly. Also, when scrolling a piece of text across the screen the wrap (if you want to wrap it) is sensitive to the width (or height if scrolling vertically). If one wants to wrap between 0 and -1 for example, the wrap modifier can't do it. The wrap modifier will only wrap to a positive number. If using a 2d image of a cane you could only rotate it around the z-axis without distorting the image or giving away the illusion of it being just a 2d plane. So in that sense, yes, 3d is the only way to go. Check out this animation which is all 2d planes: https://magicmusicvisuals.com/forums/viewto...

Build a candy cane in blender (bevel a bezier)
Export as 3ds.
In Magic insert an Object module
Configure it to open the candy cane 3ds file
Add transform rotate
Add colour
This is what it might look like with a couple of added effects:
