Re: Starfield modification (FOR command), custom blocks
Yes the Starfield is a bit limited but that doesn't mean one can't do a wide range of visuals with it. If you have read the manual then you'll know you can use any sprite, still or animated, as a particle. There are plenty of examples out there of more sophisticated particle systems but very few are...

Re: Some newbie questions (ADD BLEND, modify Starfield)
The manual is probably a better place to look for answers on... Shaders Starfield circles never were more bright if they accumulated in the screen Additive blending of white+white won't give white+ (on most displays), it can only give you white - i.e (1,1,1) + (1,1,1) doesn't give (2,2,2) but (1,1,1...

I've tried with a couple of green screened videos here. Throwing together a Brightness/Contrast (0.9/0.0) with a Posterise (1.0) seems to consistently give a completely white object. It is x*fntSize/tmp+os.
Where 'x' is the input from the Ramp, 'fntSize' is the font size matching the Text module and 'tmp' is the fudge-factor to reduce the digits down so they just fit in the screen. 'os' is the offset to pull the digits to the beginning when x = 0.

Re: Recent gig
It is all a bit too easy with Visikord which I spout into Magic. I don't use much of what the program offers except the kinect capture. There's a 30 day trial if you want to try it yourself. Davor, the developer is a nice chap and quite receptive of VJ needs. It is not perfect but it has been solid ...

Save the code into a text file (e.g. RemoveAlpha.txt) and load the text file into the GLShader module.

If you search for colour (or color) in the forum you'll find a few discussions on the merits or otherwise of colour in the UI.

Re: "Add Black Background" option
Use this GLShader to remove the alpha:
Code: Select all
void mainImage( out vec4 fragColor, in vec2 fragCoord )
{
vec2 uv = fragCoord.xy / iResolution.xy;
vec4 tex = texture(iChannel0,uv);
fragColor = vec4(tex.xyz, 1.0);
}

Yes, capturing through a Kinect camera and mixing in MMV. I had wanted to do the complete night in MMV but it being a 10 hour session I had to break out Resolume too. I have fun in both programs but I find I can be much more creative in Magic. At one point there was at least four different layers of...

Recent gig
I VJ'd at the weekend (Sat 29 Apr 2017) and tried to take some video. I'll have to make more effort next time to get better footage but these dancers were having such fun I thought I'd post despite the quality.

That's a great reel and nice to see a snippet of magic in there at the end. I need to get a reel done myself but tend to be a bit lax at recording my sessions.

AbstractCurves (http://abstractcurves.com/) is quite nice and can generate stills with alpha. If you can come up with a magic project to emulate AC and have it animated that would be quite nice

Re: Can Magic render video + audio, or just video ?
Audio files that are imported into Magic MV are rendered to the exported along with video. Audio from another application or external is not (cannot be) exported because the export process is not real-time or synchronised to live audio. I'm sure I saw (at least one) fragment shader that that implemented painting with light though I can't find one now that doesn't use multiple buffers. You could find a feedback shader and a webcam and a torch.

Re: Colors to help oversight
Just a couple more things regarding midi visibility and sub-scenes: 1 whenever a sub-scene is active, its midi assignments will respond. For example, midi assigned in post processing will be active in all comps using it. 2 if you just have to have controlled values visible , plonk them in a global f...

Re: Colors to help oversight
I respect the developer's efforts to keep the application's branded aesthetic consistent and professional. However, I believe there is a growing list of suggestions on how to improve the UI including the use of colour, even from myself (e.g. colours in annotation and status display). For me, the obj...

In this post (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1110) I suggested a few real-time additions to annotations. An image would be useful mostly for documentation but also, perhaps, for midi or OSC layouts for the current scene.

I gave it a quick try out and it worked perfectly. Don't have too much use for visualising midi myself but it is interesting nonetheless. There's another thread requesting a repeater type module (https://magicmusicvisuals.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1204) which, if a range of midi notes or CC...

Since it isn't possible (yet!) to apply globals as modifier parameters I've set the global position offsets to the same midi control to make it easier to change in realtime.

There is an exemplar in the FFGL world provided free from Hive8 - Horizontal Clone cloner.png There is also the Array effect already in MMV though this has only translation for its clones. Another way to do this is to have cascading globals which use previous globals then add to them - you can build...

Re: Is it possible to render 4K videos?
It is a little less convenient but rendering to PNG is the way to go here. Just tested a 3840x2160 render and put it back together with ffmpeg. It's definitely not real-time even for a simple waveform. ffmpeg -r 60 -f image2 -s 3840x2160 -i pic%04d.png -vcodec libx264 -crf 25 -pix_fmt yuv420p test.mp4

Nice app - thanks for making it available. Reads audio from Virtual Audio Cable no problem through live button so no need for queuing tracks. The MIDI is not working so well for me. The beat square next to the BPM indicator seems to be ticking close to the music and the module auto-learns the clock ...

Blur the ellipse before multiplying it to get a soft edge. Or use a vignette IFS before the radial blur.

I'm impressed with your tenacity to get textured models into MMV - they look great. The wormhole widget rotating in the corner looks like an A most of the time. The type-on effect is good - would be nice to see it native to MMV. Also like the equations though these might look more mysterious with an...

Re: Video scale according to sound
In a word, scale. What I often do is add a global, e.g. BassScale which responds to bass audio offset by one which I apply to both X and Y of a scale module. To emulate the video you posted you could add a radial blur with a threshold on bass. Another way is to apply a bulge effect reactive to audio.

Two transforms in series would allow you to add two channels for rotation, position and scaling. Two AudioToImage modules can be blended together to combine channels.

If you want to work in MMV and have exact but organic responses to music and then replay it without interaction you could perform with a midi controller and record the midi. You can then use that midi file to replay the recorded interaction many times. starts at nothing, builds to max volume then di...
